Travel to Miyakojima Island

Part 2

February 20 (Fri.)

We got up at 6 o’clock and went to a restaurant to eat breakfast at 7 o’clock. There were many people who took seats and were eating. The sun rise time was about 7 o’clock and it was getting lighter.

We took seats near the window and chose foods and drinks. The mango juice tasted good and I drank two glass of juice. We left the hotel at 9 o’clock and passed the Kurimajima Bridge near the hotel. The wind was very strong and it was raining. The weather was very bad, but we went a view point named Ryugujyo which was located at the top of the hill in Kurima Island.

The wind was so strong that we could not go up to the top of tower. The place seemed to be a good point to see the sea, but we gave up seeing the scenery at this time and decided to come here in the afternoon. We began to drive a car head to north of the island by way of downtown of Miyako Island. It was not so crowded that we could drive the town smoothly. We dropped in the salt factory located in the northern part of the island and a lady who worked for the company explained the factory in detail. It was very simple to produce to salt.

The salt production process used the membrane to condense the salt water and then it was flowed over the heated plate between 120 and 160 degree. The salt was powder and was not so strong salty taste. There were many usage of the salt explained. I was interested in the usage for hay heaver and mizumushi. We bought two bags of salt. After that, we crossed the bridge again and then headed to the south-east Higashi-Hennazaki, we found a restaurant in the country club near the Higashi-Hennazaki and we ate lunch there. The location was good to see the sea. After that, we visited Higashi-Hennazaki, but the wind was so strong that we could not walk smoothly and gave up going to the edge of the peninsula. Before returning to the hotel, we went to Kaiho-kan literally meaning the museum of sea treasure. It was located on the cliff, so we could see another side of Higashi-Hennazaki. We supplied gasoline and I realized that the location was next to the Awamori factories. We tried to visit the Ryugujyo which was located at the top of the hill in Kurimajima again. The wind was still strong, but the wind was weaker in the afternoon than in the morning. I took a few pictures from there. We arrived at the hotel and returned the rent car and walked along the beach and reached to the one side of Kurimajima. I took pictures of the sea and bridge. We ate dinner at the same Japanese restaurant and enjoyed eating. In a room, we drank beer and Awamori.

February 21 (Sat.)

We got up at the same time as last day. We were not hungry, so we stayed in our room and watched TV for a while. The weather was fine, so we walked along the beach. The sand of the beach was beautiful.

The trail along the beach was well maintained and was easy to walk. As there were only a few people walking in a long beach named Marihama Beach, it is incredible to think about beach near the downtown of Tokyo. It was one hour’s walk and we got tired of walking, but it was a good exercise and we felt hungry. We decided to eat breakfast at a restaurant outside which tasted very good.

In this season of Miyako Island, the temperature was over 20 degree and it was comfortable. We were enjoying and relaxed very much during staying in Miyakojima Island. As there was a shuttle bus service to the airport available, we left the hotel at 11:20 and took a direct flight to Haneda Airport.
