Hokkaidou Trip ’07

Part 3

August 5th (Sun.)

It was cloudy, but fortunately not raining. I got up at 4:30 in the morning and took a walk near the inn. It was Sukoton cape and I had very beautiful scenery. Of course, nobody is there.

There were many birds flying and so many ships in the sea. I wondered what they tried to catch. I took many pictures with 10 times zoom up. I realized that they were catching sea urchins. The air was very fresh and very comfortable. I enjoyed seeing very beautiful scenery and breathing fresh air very much without any disturbance.

After we ate breakfast, we left for Kafuka by the owner's car. There was a young family including two years daughter and a baby in the same car. They got off at Hamanaka which was the same place as we got off the day before. They intended to trail the four hours nature course. We were a little worried about them, because there was very strong wind at the top of Mt.Gorota which was located above the steep cliff. But it was calm and fine today.

We arrived at Kafuka harbor and checked the time when the bus bound for Shiretoko would leave. The bus left at 8:27 and we began to trail at 8:40. As the trail continued to go up and got tired, we took pictures of various flowers. We reached Motochi light house in a less than one hour. Unfortunately there was dense fog and we could see anything. It seemed that the light house was located above the steep cliff, but we could not see the sea at all. We kept walking and the weather was getting better and we sometimes saw the field filled with flowers and seaside scenery. The trail goes along the seaside cliff and we could see very beautiful landscape and flowers. I wished I could have better weather.

There were many good scenic spots and sometimes took a rest and ate two rice balls which were made by the inn's staff. Eating in great nature made us taste good.

We arrived at the scenic spot of Momoiwa at 11:30 and we drank water and ate lunch. I took pictures of Momoiwa which looked like peach. As we had a plenty of time, we decided to continue on walking another trail of Motochi including Nekodai and Jizo-iwa. Nekodai was the good place to see the Momo-iwa and a great huge rock like a cat. From the scenic spot, I could see the youth hostel Momo-iwa So which I stayed about 35 years ago.

The hostel near the seashore was located in the very good scenic spot. It reminded me of my young student's age. We walked to Motochi along the paved road and passed through the Motochi town and approached the Jizo-iwa. It was a very big rock which looked like Jizo, but we could not access near the rock, because the cliff near the rock seemed to be fragile and the sign board said that don't access the rock and keep out from the rope.

We had one hour that a bus would leave here for Kafuka, so we dropped in a restaurant and ordered sea-urchin-don. The taste of this sea-urchin-don was not so good as the last night sea-urchin eating at the inn.

When I was walking near the Kafuka ferry terminal, my wife found the Mitsui Kanko Hotel bus. She asked if we could take it. Luckily we could take it and checked in the hotel at 2 o'clock.

As we felt tired, we took a nap for a while and then took a walk near the Kafuka Bay. After we took a bath, we ate dinner. There were many people in a dining room. I saw many bus stopped in front of the hotel, so many tour group stayed here. After we enjoyed eating, we went to bed.
