JUNE

April August

June 21st  and 22nd (Sat. and Sun.)

I left the hotel and took a local train to Frankfurt Airport. I left for Narita and then returned to my home. I had very busy schedule.

June 20th (Fri.)

I took ICE and then went off the station. In front of the station, our company’s person was waiting for me and I talked with him and explained my presentation material before the meeting. We had three hours meeting and returned to the station. We had fruitful discussion and I felt that it was worth visiting in this chance.

In the evening I walked along the river near Frankfurt Station for one hour.

I had Japanese food in an Asian Restaurant, but it was not good taste. It was not Japanese taste. I went to bed earlier than usual.

June 19th (Thurs.)

I attended the morning conference. After I had lunch, I packed my luggage and then took a shuttle bus to Naples Airport. This day was the last day and in the afternoon the conference still continued, but many people took a bus to the airport.

I had another business trip in Germany. As there was not a direct flight from Naples to Frankfurt, I went Frankfurt Airport by way of Munich. It took a lot of time to reach Frankfurt. I stayed in front of Frankfurt Station. It was very convenient to access to the station. I ate Italian food outside the restaurant at night and felt comfortable

June 18th (Wed.)

I attended the conference, but there were fewer attendants than the day before.

In the afternoon the conference organizer arranged for tour of historical residence area “Ercolano” which is located near Naples and was suddenly buried by the explosion of mountain during Roman Era about 2000 years ago. It was the resort area for patrician during Roman era. I was surprised to see many houses still well reserved and they were not big different from present houses in Naples. We could easily compare the houses of Ercolano with present houses in Naples, because they were standing closely each other. I was very surprised to see the high level technology of building houses 2000 years ago during Roman era. Pompei is much larger town than Ercolano which is located near Ercolano. I took a lot of pictures. As it was a hot day, I sometimes took a rest in a old house.

As I felt tired, I did not attend the banquet held in the different town.

June 17th (Tue.)

I attended the conference and during lunch time I attended the editorial board meeting. The Polymer Processing Society publishes the technical journal “International Polymer Processing” and once a year we have an editorial board meeting at the conference site. There were about fifteen people attended and we discussed journal contents and how to make it more popular and elevate the impact factor. As there were many native speakers in the meeting, I felt it was a little difficult to speak frankly in the same as Japanese speaking, but I expressed my opinion. I talked with many people and asked them to write manuscripts of “Film Processing” which will be published in a few years. I took an editor of this book.

June 16th (Mon.)

Everyday I had breakfast with Kanazawa University group who came to the restaurant early in the morning.

The conference began and I gave a keynote lecture for forty minute and many people attended my lecture. I could give a good presentation and respond many questions. Because I thought I had English conversation lesson every Saturday and also had morning English conversation. I was relaxed and continued on attending the conference.

June 15th (Sun.)

In Naples, I visited the national museum of archeology which was very large and displayed many famous pictures and sculptures. I met my friends there. They arrived at Italy one day earlier than I and visited many places in Italy.

I returned to Naples Station. I took a train bound for Salerno and then I met a lot of Japanese people in front of the station. Most of people began to walk to the hotel where the conference would be held. Maybe about ten people walked with their luggage for ten minutes. When I saw them, it looked like a strange Japanese group. I could see Mediterranean Sea along the street and had a strong sun shine.

When I checked in a hotel, it took a lot of time and the hotel clerk was not kind and his service was bad. I thought most of the hotel clerks did not get used to have a lot of foreign guests. It took more than ten minutes to check in. When I opened door, I found that the room was already occupied and there were another person’s luggage. I went down and claimed it. I needed another 5 minutes to have another room. My first hotel image was very bad, but the room which I had was clean and large. The room had a balcony with chairs. I could see Mediterranean See from balcony.

After I registered in the conference, I took a walk along the seashore. I was refreshed and enjoyed seeing the sea and had fresh air.

June 14th (Sat.)

Today was the day when I left for Europe. I had a keynote presentation at the international conference held in Salerno, Italy and what’s more I had a business trip to Germany. I left early in the morning and I took the Lufthansa’s airplane bound for Munich and then changed airplanes there and went to Naples. This was the first time to visit Italy.

Recently Naples was famous for a dirty city and I was a little worried about it. I could sleep well in an airplane and safely reached Munich Airport. I changed airplanes and then took an airplane bound for Naples.

When I arrived at Naples Airport, I met some friends and talked with them. One professor went to Salerno directly and he told me he would wait for a shuttle service which was arranged by the conference organizer. Before I got air tickets, I did not know this service. I directly went to a hotel with another Japanese person who also stayed at the same hotel in front of Naples Station.
