August 11th (Mon.)

At 11:00 o’clock the ryokan’s driver took us to Isahaya Station and then took an super express train which was very comfortable. We left Fukuoka Airport for Haneda Airport.

August 10th (Sun.)

After breakfast, we left the hotel for a good view point of Mt.Fugen and 360 degree view. We took a bus service to the foot of mountain and then took a cable car to reach a view point. Then we walked up for ten minutes. As it was a fine day, we could have a very beautiful scenery. We could see Mt.Fugen and Onzen town and many islands in the sea. From the top of the hill, we could find a lake and decided to walk there. After returning to the town, we began to walk around the lake. Though it took about one hour, there was nobody walking in the trail. It was hot.

After returning to the ryokan, I took a bath and then had dinner with Tai sashimi.

August 9th (Sat.)

We left the hotel and then took a super express train bound for Isahaya which is the nearest JR station to access to Unzen. It took more than one and half hours and arrived at Isahaya Station at noon. As we had an appointment time when the Japanese Ryokan would pick us up in front of the station at one o’clock, we took lunch near the station. We ordered Nagasaki Chanpon. When we returned to the station before one o’clock, a Japanese inn’s car had already arrived. We were only customers and we took a car and then left for Unzen. It was about one hour drive and it was very convenient for us to access Unzen which is famous for hot spring. When we went to Unzen as honeymoon, we stayed at the same Japanese inn. It was long years ago and at that time I was very busy to get married and prepared for leaving Japan for USA to study at University of Tennessee.

One hour later we arrived at the Japanese inn “Miyazaki Ryokan”. The time was about 2 o’clock and it was still early time, but we were introduced to our room. This Japanese Inn had a very beautiful garden and we had a good impression of treatment well organized. As we had a plenty of time before dinner, we took a walk around the Ryokan. It was located near the “Unzen Jigoku”. It was a hot day and what’s more Jigoku maede us feel hotter.

This ryokan is famous for hot spring, so we took a bath and enjoyed. When we had dinner, we ordered Okoze’s sashimi as an additional menu. Okoze is one of fishes. We enjoyed eating dinner.

August 8th (Fri.)

I left home at 7:00 o’clock and went to Haneda Airport. Today I was invited to give a lecture to Dr. course students by Kyushu University. Usually I give a lecture of my research, but this time I was asked to talk about “what I expect Dr. course students”. Dr. course students do not know the company research. I talked about what is the difference between the research of University and the research of Company and what kind of research I expect Dr. course students. There were about 100 people attended. On the same day, it was open campus day. There were many high school students who had laboratory tour and attended explanation of university research activities. It was a very hot day and it was almost impossible for me to keep standing outside.

After my seminar, I had a drinking party with another presenters and professors of Kyushu University until 20:00 o’clock.

The engineering campus of Kyushu University was located in a rural area like Kanazawa University, but a bus service to Hakata Station was available, it was convenient to access to Hakata. I went to a hotel located near the station and I met my wife who spent most of day meeting her friend.

I had a summer vacation and made a plan to go to Unzen.
